Singapore consortium to launch an advanced small satellite at very low earth orbit to trial new technologies · Project supported by Singapore’s national space office, the Office for Space Technology & Industry (OSTIn) Singapore will seek to tackle new frontiers in space, using advanced space technology in a consortium project led by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore).

SINGAPORE – Singapore will build an advanced small satellite – the size of a mini refrigerator and weighing 100kg – that will fly very close to earth to trial new technologies and test the emerging space of flying satellites at low altitudes.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) launched a new monitoring system in January this year. This not only improves the speed and accuracy of inspecting footpaths and cycling paths but also reduces overall manpower requirements—including back-end analysis and shift personnel—by approximately 60% compared to the past.

Researchers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), in collaboration with LightHaus Photonics and Aliena, have developed a prototype micro-satellite named ELITE (Extremely Low Earth Imaging Technology Explorer).
Scheduled for launch in June 2025, ELITE will operate in a very low Earth orbit at around 250 km to test advanced imaging and propulsion technologies using atomic oxygen.
